Profile
Syukri Ramzan is a self-taught composer and also founder of Sanggar Mayang Sari. They received several awards overseas, for instance in Brunei Darussalam and Singapore during the Singapore Arts Festival 2008. Syukri composed the following pieces of music. .
Performance: Musik Enggano and Musik Dol Buai.
Synopsis
Musik Enggano Five original tribes were living on the island of Enggano when foreign tribes tried to settle there as well. Continuous tribal fighting diminished the population and so they had no choice but to stop tribal warfare and eventually became a new tribe, the Khamay.
In order to pacify the spirits of the victims on both sides, they created a ritual which is expressed in musical terms.
Dol Buai II is a further development of Dol Buai I with original music from the Bengkulu region (Sumatra). Bengkulu music is a hymn played in a slow, swinging rhythm.
