Profile
Pring Serentet was founded in 2000 by its choreographer Cawati, born in Banyumas, East Java, in 1982. She studied dance at STSI (ISI) Surakarta.
When growing up in her native village, Banyuwangi, she became closely familiar with local traditions like “Lenggerda Sintren”. She also studied other dances, vocal techniques and Javanese music.
Among her works are “Nak” (2005), “You and Me”, “Banjarang Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk” both (2007), and “Lengger Dukuh Paruk” (2008).

Performance: Banjaran Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk
Synopsis
The Banjaran (epic) is based on the trilogy “Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk” by Ahmad Tohari. Its theme is about the fame, glory and eventual failure of a political system demonstrated by the fate of a Ronggeng-dancer.
The main character, the girl Srintil, lived in a small village called Dukuh Paruk, Java.
One day Srintil received a message that she was to continue the tradition of the Ronggeng dancer in her village. She studied hard, became very famous until one day she found herself on the wrong side of the fence; consequently she was disposed of.
Her tragic story mirrors the political unrest in Indonesia in 1965, which also affected the life of Srintil as a dancer because art in general was used as a medium for political propaganda.
Banjaran Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk is an interaction of dance, drama and traditional music “calung”, played on bamboo instruments.
